In Cluj-Napoca, Romania, they’re building a brand-new light metro / rapid transit line (Line 1) — set to be the country’s second underground metro system after Bucharest.
Length & Scope: ~ 21.03 km total with 19 underground stations plus one depot.
First Stage: The initial phase is ~ 9.16 km, 9 stations, plus depot, to be built first.
Timeline: Construction began in 2024; full operation planned for ~ 2031.
Daily Ridership & Impact: Expected ~ 164,000 passengers/day; will link Florești, the city centre, and extend towards Sopor, improving transit, reducing traffic and pollution, boosting connectivity. EU Urban Mobility Observatory+1
Cost & Funding: Cost ~ RON 13.7 billion (≈ €2.5-3 billion depending on rates) with part financed through Romania’s recovery plans and the state.
