Bucharest is finally building the long-awaited M6 metro line, the one that will link the city center to Otopeni Airport. Think of it as the capital’s missing spine: starting from the existing 1 Mai station, it stretches north with 12 new stations over about 14 kilometers, eventually pulling right up to Henri Coandă’s departure hall.
The project is split in two acts. The first section — from 1 Mai up to the future “Tokyo” station — is already under construction, with work underway since late 2023. The second section, from Tokyo all the way to the airport, is also contracted and set to follow. By 2028, if deadlines hold, a traveler could hop on at Gara de Nord and ride directly to their flight without battling DN1 traffic.
Beyond the convenience for fliers, the M6 promises relief for the congested north side of Bucharest, better connections for commuters, and a symbolic upgrade: Romania’s busiest airport finally tied to its capital by rail, like any serious European hub.
