The green steel factory in Sweden is a project by Stegra (formerly H2 Green Steel), located in Boden. It is a large-scale, integrated steel plant that aims to produce almost carbon-free steel using green hydrogen derived from renewable electricity. The process involves using renewable energy to power an electrolyzer to create green hydrogen, which then replaces coal in the direct reduction process to make sponge iron. This hydrogen-based process significantly reduces CO₂ emissions compared to traditional steelmaking. The plant is scheduled to begin operations in 2026 and will produce significant amounts of green steel annually.
